Conor McGregor Tabbed as Slight Favorite in Potential Boxing Match vs. Oscar De La Hoya

Conor McGregor has one boxing match under his belt, and Oscar De La Hoya has 45.

Still, that hasn’t stopped one oddsmaker from making “The Notorious” one a slight betting favorite in a hypothetical bout between the two. According to BetDSI.eu, McGregor is listed as a -125 favorite in a boxing match against the retired 44-year-old former champion. De La Hoya, meanwhile, checks in at +105.

"This isn't a GOAT versus an untrained boxer scenario all over again,” read a statement from a BetDSI.eu spokesperson. “With proper time to train, we expect McGregor to be quite competitive in the ring, particularly against an aging De La Hoya that doesn't possess the quickness or power he may need to win.”

McGregor’s lone boxing foray came against Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas. While many observer thought the Dublin native won some early rounds of “The Money Fight,” Mayweather ultimately prevailed via 10th round technical knockout.

De La Hoya, who was one of boxing’s biggest stars during his prime, owns a 39-6 career mark and won world championships in six different weight classes over the course of his career. In a recent interview with Dash Radio, De La Hoya hinted that he would end his retirement for a chance to face McGregor in the ring.

“You know I’m competitive,” De La Hoya said . “You know I still have it in me. I’ve been secretly training. Secretly training. I’m faster than ever, and stronger than ever. I know I could take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I’ll come back for that fight. Two rounds.

“Just one more. I’m calling him out. Two rounds. That’s all I need. That’s all I’m going to say.”

De La Hoya was not a fan of the Mayweather-McGregor booking, but that was in part because the blockbuster fight threatened to take away pay-per-view buys from the Golden Boy Promotions bout pitting Canelo Alvarez against Gennady Golovkin a few weeks later. In a lengthy Facebook post, De La Hoya claimed “our sport might not ever recover.”

It is currently unclear what McGregor’s next move might be. He recently said that he was in negotiations for a fight in the UFC that would unify the light heavyweight title. However, the SBG Ireland star also declared that he needed to be enticed by a promoter/partner offer to make his Octagon return worthwhile.
