“The Ultimate Fighter 22” will have some serious star power in the coaching ranks.
UFC President Dana White announced on Sunday that Conor McGregor and Urijah Faber will be opposing coaches on “TUF 22.” The cast will consist of 16 lightweights, with McGregor leading the eight-member European team and Faber overseeing the U.S. squad.
The timing seems perfect after McGregor and Faber had a brief run-in that appeared on Episode 9 of UFC 189 “Embedded,” but the two stars will not square off in the Octagon.
“Just to let everybody know, [McGregor] will not fight Urijah Faber,” White said during the “TUF 21” finale broadcast. “These guys are just coaching, mentoring these young fighters. The best decision was to get Conor McGregor for the Europeans. And Faber is such a great coach and has a lot to offer the U.S. team.”
McGregor, who captured the interim featherweight crown with a second-round stoppage of Chad Mendes at UFC 189 on Saturday night, is awaiting a title unification bout with Jose Aldo when the Brazilian recovers from a broken rib. He is 6-0 in the UFC, with all but one of his victories coming inside the distance.
The former WEC featherweight ruler, Faber has made 135 pounds his home in the UFC. He returned to 145 pounds this past April, when he dropped a five-round verdict to ex-lightweight ruler Frankie Edgar. The Team Alpha Male leader is 8-4 in the Octagon overall.
“TUF 22” will debut on Sept. 9 with a two-hour premier on Fox Sports 1 at 10 p.m. ET. The season will continue with 11 one-hour episodes. The finalists of the reality show will square off at an as yet to be announced event.
