Cub Swanson Says He Broke Hand for 10th Time vs. Artem Lobov at UFC Fight Night 108

Cub Swanson landed a whopping 209 significant strikes in his triumph over Artem Lobov at UFC Fight Night 108, many of them with his hands.

That figure was a UFC/WEC featherweight record, but it came with a price. In a brief update on UFC Tonight on Wednesday, Swanson revealed that he broke his left hand at some point during the 25-minute headliner at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., last Saturday.

“Unfortunately I just got back from the doctors; I don’t know when, but I broke my hand at some point,” Swanson said. “That’s the 10th time I’ve broken my hand now. That’s been a little bit of a problem. But I’ll heal up.”

While Swanson controlled the majority of the fight thanks to a versatile offensive arsenal, he was never able to put Lobov away. According to the Jackson-Wink MMA representative, he could have padded his striking totals even more if his corner had gotten its way.

“My coaches were yelling at me during the fight to keep throwing more punches, more combinations, but I was only throwing single shots because he had the hardest head,” Swanson said. “And every time I was hitting him by the third, fourth, fifth rounds, my hands were just aching. So it turns out one of my hands was broke.”

Swanson has now won four consecutive fights in the Octagon and 10 of his last 12 overall. After the victory, the Palm Springs, Calif., native set his sights on the winner of the featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway at UFC 212. However, that was before Swanson knew about his hand injury. He did not give a timetable for his return.

“I was giving it my all and definitely was trying to fight a smart fight and get the job done,” Swanson said. “I definitely feel like I accomplished that.”
