Damon Jackson Throttles Mauro Chaulet in Triumphant LFA 83 Homecoming

Damon Jackson got back to his winning ways, as the Legacy Fighting Alliance on Friday returned to Dallas for LFA 83.

The former LFA featherweight champion stepped back into the promotion for the first time since he vacated his belt to sign with the Professional Fighters League. While he did not return from the PFL $1 million richer, Jackson (17-3-1) used his experience to take out Mauro Chaulet with ease. “The Leech” rocked Chaulet (13-7) multiple times on the feet before moving to his opponent’s back. The hometown favorite then locked in a rear-naked choke and coaxed the submission at 2:11 of Round 1.

In the welterweight co-main event, Justin Patterson took on Matt Dixon at 170 pounds. Dixon (9-0) kept his undefeated record intact with a contentious unanimous decision that saw him win all three rounds on all of three judges’ scorecards. Patterson (11-6) managed to do more damage on the feet, but Dixon’s takedowns proved to be the deciding factor.

Hailey Cowan cemented herself as a bantamweight to watch, as she defeated Brittney Cloudy in a three-round showcase at 135 pounds. The fight was not without some scares for Cowan (5-1), as Cloudy (2-2) came close to finishing her with a rear-naked choke in the third round. The judges ultimately awarded Cowan a split decision: 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28.

In heavyweight action, Vernon Lewis took on Austen Lane. Lewis (8-4) took down Lane (6-3) early in the first round and spent the rest of the frame landing ground-and-pound until a merciful stoppage was called. The end came 4:10 into Round 1.

Meanwhile, Victor Altamirano bounced back from his first professional loss and stayed perfect inside the LFA cage against Chris Ocon. The flyweights stayed active through all three rounds, standing and on the ground. In the end, Altamirano (7-1) was awarded a split decision from the judges: 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. Ocon (4-2) has suffered back-to-back defeats since he started his career with four consecutive victories.

A bantamweight bout between Fernando Garcia and Jay Viola opened the main card. It was a one-sided affair that saw Garcia piece up and bloody Viola (3-2) on the feet. However, Garcia (7-1) had to settle for a unanimous decision, as he could not put away his 45-year-old opponent.

In preliminary action, Malik Lewis (1-0) made a successful pro debut and punched out David Luna (0-1) in the second round of their lightweight clash; and Elijah Johns (6-1) dispatched Zac Kelley (9-22) with punches in the first round of their encounter at 155 pounds.
