The Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s flyweight division no longer has a queen after Dana White revealed that Nicco Montano has been stripped of her title after failing to make weight for her UFC 228 title bout against Valentina Shevchenko on Saturday night.
Montano won the UFC women’s flyweight belt after taking “The
Ultimate Fighter” Season 26 crown as a huge underdog back in 2017,
defeating Roxanne
Modafferi to win the then-vacant title.
After failing to defend her belt for a year, Montano unceremoniously pulled out of the Shevchenko fight following being hospitalized during her weight cut on Friday morning. The title fight was quickly scrapped and by the end of the day she was stripped of her belt.
Jimmie Rivera vs. John Dodson will replace the women’s flyweight title fight on the pay-per-view portion of Saturday’s card, UFC officials announced.
White told TSN Sports that Montano had been stripped of her belt by late Friday afternoon, saying Shevchenko will fight for the vacant title at a later date.
UFC 228 takes place tomorrow night from Dallas, with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defending his belt against Darren Till in the main event.
