On Friday, “DC” posted a photo of himself on the podium in a similar emotional state after losing a wrestling tournament years ago.
“People putting the photo of me crying don’t realize it’s ok lol,” Cormier wrote. “I been doing this crying since I was a kid lol. Here’s another one for y’all this is me crying on the awards stand at the junior nationals after losing in the finals.”
In his rematch with bitter rival Jon Jones at UFC 214, Cormier was stopped by a head kick and follow-up punches 3:01 into the third round of the evening’s headliner in Anaheim, Calif. Cormier was distraught after the loss, and memes of him crying in the Octagon were everywhere in the days following the event.
However, the bout was overturned to a no contest by the California State Athletic Commission after Jones tested positive for the anabolic steroid turinabol. As a result, the UFC stripped Jones of the title and reinstated Cormier as champion.
Cormier will defend the crown against breakout performer Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 in Boston on Jan. 20. Jones, with a decision triumph over the American Kickboxing Academy product at UFC 182, remains the only person to defeat Cormier in 21 professional bouts.
“What can I say,” Cormier wrote. “I hate losing.”
