Jan 8, 2007
PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) will not follow in the footsteps of Mirko Filipovic (Pictures), who last week officially departed the Japanese mixed martial arts organization for North America and the UFC. On its Web site, PRIDE revealed Emelianenko agreed to a contract extension that will keep the Russian star in a ring for the immediate future.

"I am happy to continue my career in PRIDE and look forward to adding to my unbeaten streak as champion," the 30-year-old Emelianenko, widely regarded as the top heavyweight in the world, told Pridefc.com. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In December, Sherdog.com reported that Emelianenko (25-1-0, 1 NC) would face Jeff Monson (Pictures) March 3 on a bodogFIGHT-promoted card in St. Petersburg, Russia. While that fight is still scheduled, bodogFIGHT plans to push the Emelianenko-Monson contest back to April.
