Demetrious Johnson, John Dodson Cleared for UFC on Fox 6 Flyweight Title Bout

Never have two flyweights been placed on such a visible pedestal.

Champion Demetrious Johnson checked in at 125 pounds for his five-round title defense against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 winner John Dodson (124) in the UFC on Fox 6 main event on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago. The six other combatants called to arms on the main card, including light heavyweight co-headliners Quinton Jackson (204) and Glover Teixeira (206), also met their mandated weight requirements at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Anchored at AMC Pankration, where he trains under Matt Hume, Johnson last appeared at UFC 152 in September, when he captured the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s flyweight crown with a split verdict over Joseph Benavidez at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The 26-year-old Kentucky native has compiled a 4-1-1 record since joining the UFC as part of the World Extreme Cagefighting merger in 2010. Wins over Ian McCall, Miguel Torres and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto buoy Johnson’s stellar resume. In 19 professional appearances, he has never been finished.

Dodson will carry a five-fight winning streak into the most significant bout of his career. The 28-year-old Albuquerque, N.M., native last competed at UFC on FX 5 in October, when he stopped Jussier da Silva on second-round punches at the Target Center in Minneapolis. All five of Dodson’s defeats have come by decision. He owns a perfect 3-0 mark in the UFC.

UFC on Fox 6 -- which airs live on Fox at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT -- will also feature a lightweight duel pitting former WEC champion Anthony Pettis (155) against Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts standout Donald Cerrone (155) and a featherweight clash matching Roufusport representative Erik Koch (145) with the surging Ricardo Lamas (145).

Three hours prior, the FX network will carry six preliminary bouts: T.J. Grant (155) vs. Matt Wiman (156), Clay Guida (146) vs. Hatsu Hioki (146), Pascal Krauss (171) vs. Mike Stumpf (170), Ryan Bader (205) vs. Vladimir Matyushenko (205), Mike Russow (256) vs. Shawn Jordan (251) and Rafael Natal (185) vs. Sean Spencer (186). The remaining undercard matchup will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 4:35 ET/1:35 PT, as David Mitchell (171) locks horns with Norwegian welterweight Simeon Thoresen (171).
