Following the cancellation of Urijah Faber versus Raphael Assuncao, a welterweight bout featuring Demian Maia and Ryan LaFlare will now serve as the main event of UFC Fight Night on March 21.
Ultimate Fighting Championship officials announced the bout’s promotion on Wednesday. UFC Fight Night “Maia vs. LaFlare” takes place at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro and also features a lightweight pairing of Josh Thomson and Gilbert Burns.
After dropping decisions against Jake Shields and Rory MacDonald, Maia bounced back with a decision of his own against Alexander Yakovlev at UFC Fight Night “Miocic vs. Maldonado.” The 37-year-old has been fighting under the UFC banner since 2007, and continues his trend of fighting in his native country of Brazil.
LaFlare, 31, has yet to taste defeat as a professional. Since joining the UFC ranks in 2013, the Ring of Combat veteran has reeled off four straight decision wins, defeating the likes of Court McGee and John Howard. Aside from ROC 43, this will be the second main event fight of LaFlare’s career.
