Dream GP Taking Shape
The new-look Fight Entertainment Group has announced three
additional quarterfinal bouts for the 154-pound Dream lightweight
grand prix, set to commence March 15 at Saitama Super Arena.
Joining the already announced and much anticipated bout between Gesias "JZ" Calvancante (Pictures) and Shinya Aoki (Pictures), the new quarterfinal bouts will pit Tatsuya Kawajiri (Pictures) against Kultar "Black Mamba" Gill (Pictures), Joachim Hansen (Pictures) against Kotetsu Boku (Pictures) and Luis "Buscape" Firminho against Kazuyuki Miyata (Pictures).
The 29-year-old Kawajiri fought only once in 2007, taking a commanding unanimous decision win over Luiz Azeredo (Pictures) on New Year's Eve. After opening 2007 with a quick submission loss to Kazuyuki Miyata (Pictures), Gill replicated his May 2006 knockout of Hideo Tokoro (Pictures), dominating the "Cinderella Boy" en route to a first round stoppage.
After a disappointing majority decision loss to Eiji Mitsuoka (Pictures) in November, Joachim Hansen (Pictures) rebounded on New Year's Eve, taking a slick and impressive second-round submission win over the aforementioned Miyata.
Boku had a highly active 2007, fighting five times on the year, with four of those bouts coming in GCM's Cage Force 154-pound tournament. Although the tournament's clear favorite, Boku came up short in the bracket's finale, dropping a close split decision to Russian upstart and fellow Dream grand prix competitor Artur Oumakhanov (Pictures).
Miyata went 2-2 on the year in 2007, punctuated by his Dec. 31 loss to Hansen. The 25-year-old "Buscape" has been removed from action for nearly 16 months, as he spent most of 2007 seeking a rematch with rival Luiz Azeredo (Pictures), whom he dropped a split decision to in April 2005. Buscape hasn't competed since Nov. 2006, when he took a blowout decision over Nobuhiro Obiya (Pictures).
Four more quarterfinal bouts are still unannounced for the March 15 card. FEG is currently expecting the participation of Mitsuhiro Ishida (Pictures), Gilbert Melendez (Pictures), Andre "Dida" Amade, Caol Uno (Pictures), Bu Kyung Jung (Pictures), Artur Oumakhanov (Pictures), as well as two yet to be determined fighters.
