Eddie Alvarez has announced that he will fight Anthony Pettis at UFC Fight Night in Boston on Jan. 17.
The UFC lightweight confirmed the bout via Twitter on Friday. Brazilian outlet Combate was the first to report the matchup, although it has yet to be officially announced by the Las Vegas-based promotion. The UFC Fight Night bill takes place at TD Garden and is headlined by a bantamweight championship clash pitting T.J. Dillashaw against Dominick Cruz.
Alvarez, the former Bellator MMA 155-pound king, made his Octagon debut in September 2014, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Donald Cerrone at UFC 178. The Philadelphia native picked up his first promotional triumph on June 13, capturing a split verdict against Gilbert Melendez at UFC 188.
Pettis, meanwhile, has struggled to stay healthy throughout his UFC tenure and hasn’t competed since losing the lightweight title to Rafael dos Anjos on March 14. Most recently, an elbow injury forced him to withdraw from a proposed matchup with Myles Jury at UFC on Fox 16.
