Alvarez, the former lightweight champion, is coming off a third-round knockout victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 218, a victory which he claims gave him the unofficial title of the sport’s “Most Violent Fighter.” Lee, meanwhile, had a five-fight winning streak snapped in a third-round submission loss to Tony Ferguson in an interim 155-pound title bout at UFC 216.
It’s worth nothing that Diaz’s last two Octagon appearances — a submission win over Conor McGregor at UFC 196 and a majority decision defeat to the Irishman at UFC 202 — occurred at 170 pounds. A 170-pound title shot against Tyron Woodley was also reportedly in the works late last year but ultimately did not come to fruition.
