Ultimate Fighting Championship is stacking the deck for its Jan. 18 event in Boston, as Benson Henderson will fight Eddie Alvarez in lightweight action.
UFC officials confirmed the matchup on Wednesday. The UFC Fight Night card will take place at TD Garden and also features a main event of Conor McGregor against Dennis Siver. In addition, the promotion announced two more bouts for the card, as Costas Philippou will meet Uriah Hall at middleweight, while Jorge Masvidal squares off with Norman Parke at 155 pounds.
Both Henderson and Alvarez are coming off of a loss in their last outing.
Henderson was last in action at UFC Fight Night “Henderson vs. Dos Anjos” in August, losing via first-round TKO to Rafael dos Anjos. The loss was “Smooth’s” second in four fights. The former 155-pound champion has been rumored to be changing weight class, but will attempt to get back into title contention with a win against Alvarez.
Alvarez is coming off a defeat against Donald Cerrone in his Zuffa debut at UFC 178. The former Bellator MMA champion will be fighting early in 2015, likely setting the stage for the Philadelphia native to fight more than once in a calendar year, a feat Alvarez has not accomplished since 2012.
