EliteXC, CBS Announce May 31 Card
In just his third professional mixed martial arts contest, Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson
will headline what is expected to be the most watched -- and
perhaps important -- card in the sport's short history.
Fighting British heavyweight James Thompson (Pictures) live on the historic prime time debut of MMA on major network television, Ferguson, the Internet brawler turned Bas Rutten (Pictures) protege, tops a card (CBS 9 p.m. ET/PT) that features four additional bouts.
EliteXC and CBS announced the final bill, to be broadcast live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Wednesday.
An EliteXC middleweight title fight pits champion Robbie Lawler (Pictures) versus hard-punching Californian Scott Smith.
A 140-pound female bout pits Gina Carano (Pictures), of "American Gladiators" fame, versus young slugger Kaitlin Young (Pictures).
Middleweights Phil Baroni (Pictures) and Murilo Rua (Pictures) were slated to compete, however it was announced late Wednesday on ProElite.com that Joey Villasenor has replaced the Brazilian.
Rua's departure from the card came as result over concerns stemming from results of an MRI, Sherdog.com has learned.
A heavyweight contest between Brett Rogers (Pictures) and Jon Murphy rounds out the card.
On Monday, EliteXC announced the re-signing of Ferguson, Carano and Lawler to "long-term, multi-year contracts." Terms were not disclosed.
