The MMA community had to say goodbye suddenly to a bright Brazilian bantamweight prospect on Wednesday.
Alves was reportedly shot three times in his waist and leg in his garage, and was rushed to the hospital. He was unable to recover, passing away at the hospital on Wednesday.
Additionally, according to MMA Fighting, his second child was born on Thursday. An investigation is currently ongoing to determine the identity of the shooter.
Alves (13-5) won the Shooto Brazil 140-pound title in September 2018 against Diego Ribeiro, knocking out his opponent in the third round to take home the belt. He then went to fight in the Juiz de Fora Fight promotion less than a month later, and captured the bantamweight throne in that organization against Bruce Carvalho by decision.
His two bouts in 2019 saw a bit of a downslope, suffering a first-round submission loss to Herbeth Reis de Sousa in March 2019 in the Future FC promotion. He then lost his Shooto Brazil title to Elvis Batista da Silva in August 2019 at Shooto Brazil 94 by split verdict.
In one of his final posts on Instagram a few weeks ago, he posted a picture with his daughter. His caption simple, he wrote, “I love you.”
