Former WEC featherweight champion
Urijah Faber has withdrawn from a bout with
Takeya Mizugaki at
WEC 50 “Cruz vs. Benavidez” on Aug. 18 at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Faber, 31, who was to make his bantamweight debut, suffered a knee injury earlier this week in training and will be out of action most likely until September, said
Mike Roberts, Faber’s MMA Inc. agent. Roberts said Faber’s injury will not require surgery.
It is not clear if Mizugaki will remain on the card against a new challenger.
The 26-year-old Japanese import waged one of the more notable bouts of 2009 against former champion
Miguel Torres at WEC 40. In April, Mizugaki earned a unanimous decision over Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace
Rani Yahya at UFC 48 “Aldo vs. Faber” in Sacramento, Calif.
Also on the card, WEC bantamweight champion
Dominick Cruz will defend his title against
Joseph Benavidez. Team Alpha Male’s Benavidez shot into his title contendership with a commanding performance over former 135-poumd kingpin
Miguel Torres at WEC 47. Benavidez also trains with Faber.
