Fedor-Monson M-1 Global Bout Signed for Nov. 20 in Moscow

An expected heavyweight attraction between Fedor Emelianenko and Jeff Monson is now official, as M-1 Global announced on Thursday that the contest will take place Nov. 20 at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow.

The event marks the first time Emelianenko will compete on Russian soil since a 2007 victory over Matt Lindland. Little is currently known about the Nov. 20 show, save for the main event, but M-1 Global has been in negotiations with Showtime Sports in an attempt to broadcast the event on the premium cable network.

Once regarded as the world’s greatest heavyweight, Emelianenko has stumbled of late. After competing for nine years without a loss, “The Last Emperor” has dropped his last three contests, falling by submission to Fabricio Werdum last summer. Emelianenko then kicked off 2011 with a technical knockout defeat at the hands of Antonio Silva, and the 34-year-old sambo specialist followed that loss with a technical knockout to Strikeforce light heavyweight king Dan Henderson in July. Emelianenko was released from his Strikeforce contract shortly thereafter.

A former UFC heavyweight title challenger, Monson had recently discussed making a move to light heavyweight. Those plans appear to have been scrapped, however, as “The Snowman” most recently stepped up on short notice to lock horns with Daniel Cormier in Strikeforce competition on June 18, losing by unanimous decision. Known for his potent submission game, the 40-year-old is a two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist and holds more than half of his 42 career wins by submission.
