Filipovic-Nelson, Kongo-Mitrione Confirmed for UFC 137

The UFC’s big boys will come out to play in October, as the promotion Thursday revealed a pair of heavyweight showdowns tabbed for UFC 137.

As previously reported, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will meet Roy Nelson at the Oct. 29 event, while Matt Mitrione will collide with Cheick Kongo (Pictured) in a newly revealed matchup.

Headlined by a welterweight title fight between longtime UFC champion Georges St. Pierre and former Strikeforce titleholder Nick Diaz, UFC 137 will emanate from Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Mitrione has yet to taste defeat as a professional. The 32-year-old former NFL talent began his MMA career as a contestant on “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10, making his official UFC debut at the season finale in 2009. “Meathead” is a perfect 5-0 inside the Octagon, most recently knocking out Christian Morecraft at UFC Live 4 on June 26.

A 14-time UFC veteran, Kongo rebounded from back-to-back defeats in 2009 with a victory over Paul Buentello in March 2010. The Frenchman then fought Travis Browne to a draw in October, the result of Kongo being penalized a point for repeatedly grabbing the Hawaiian’s shorts during the contest. Like Mitrione, Kongo’s last outing came at UFC Live 4, when the 36-year-old stunned fellow kickboxer Pat Barry with a shocking, come-from-behind knockout midway through the first frame of their main event bout.
