Following Win Over Omigawa, Mendes Inks New UFC Deal

In the wake of his unanimous decision victory over Michihiro Omigawa at UFC 126 on Feb. 5, Team Alpha Male featherweight standout Chad Mendes has signed a new contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Mendes announced the news via Twitter on Wednesday evening, posting a picture of himself signing the agreement. The terms of Mendes’ deal were not disclosed.

A two-time NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler at California Polytechnic University, Mendes is unbeaten in 10 professional outings. The 25-year-old began his MMA career in 2008 with Tachi Palace Fights and made his World Extreme Cagefighting debut in March 2010. After besting Erik Koch, Anthony Morrison, Cub Swanson and Javier Vazquez inside the little blue cage, Mendes took his first UFC steps on Feb. 5, spoiling Omigawa’s return to the promotion.

Mendes used superior wrestling to consistently put Omigawa on his back throughout the contest. “Money” also out-boxed his opponent, displaying crisper and more fluid stand-up while bouncing combinations off of Omigawa's head.

Though the judoka threatened Mendes in the first frame with a straight armbar, the American would not relent, muscling his way out of the submission and going about his business. The first-round submission attempt was the closest Omigawa got to stealing a win, as Mendes pounded away at his foe from top position, badly lacerating the Japanese import over his eye en route the unanimous verdict.
