Mexican prospect Yair Rodriguez will attempt to take the next step in his burgeoning career when he locks horns with former lightweight king Frankie Edgar at UFC 211.
The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the pairing on Thursday. UFC 211 takes place at American Airlines Arena in Dallas on May 13 and is headlined by a heavyweight championship clash between Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos.
After a successful run at 155 pounds, Edgar moved to featherweight in 2013, losing to champion Jose Aldo in his first bout in the new weight class at UFC 156. Since then, “The Answer” has won six of seven in the Octagon, with his only defeat coming to Aldo in an interim 145-pound title bout at UFC 200.
One of the sport’s top young talents, Rodriguez will enter the matchup with Edgar on an eight-fight winning streak, a run that includes six Octagon appearances. In his last outing, “Pantera” stopped B.J. Penn via technical knockout 24 seconds into the second round of the UFC Fight Night 103 headliner.
