The UFC’s May 16 trip to Manila will feature two of MMA’s most accomplished lighter-weight fighters, as Frankie Edgar will face Urijah Faber in the evening’s featherweight main event.
Promotion officials announced the contest on Wednesday. UFC Fight Night “Edgar vs. Faber” takes place at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. While the event was originally expected to stream in its entirety via UFC Fight Pass, the main card will instead air on Fox Sports 1.
The former lightweight champion, Edgar moved to 145 pounds in 2013, falling to reigning titlist Jose Aldo in his first appearance at UFC 156. “The Answer” has won three straight at featherweight since then, besting Charles Oliveira, B.J. Penn and Cub Swanson in succession.
Faber, meanwhile, was the longtime World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight ruler but has competed exclusively at 135 pounds in the Octagon. “The California Kid” has come up short in three bantamweight title opportunities, falling twice to Renan Barao and once to Dominick Cruz. His last featherweight appearance came at WEC 48, when he dropped a five-round verdict to Jose Aldo on April 24, 2010.
Several undercard matchups were also added the card on Wednesday: Jon delos Reyes versus Roldan Sangcha-an, Kajan Johnson versus Lipeng Zhang, Tae Hyun Bang versus Jon Tuck, Jingliang Li versus Roger Zapata, and Nolan Ticman versus Zhuikui Yao.
