‘GGG’ Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe Jr. Results: HBO Boxing Play-by-Play

Roman Gonzalez vs. Edgar Sosa

Round 1

Gonzalez comes right out to the center of the ring and stalks his foe. Sosa seems to want none of it and backs away. Neither man throws anything worthwhile 30 seconds in, but Gonzalez is pressing the issue. Gonzalez lands a few jabs and then a short left hook, but Sosa takes it easily. Hard left hand by the champ moments later hurts Sosa, who quickly backs up. Gonzalez pours on the offense and lands a few lefts and rights. Sosa drops but it’s ruled a push. Sosa tries to fight back but everything that lands rocks the Mexican. Nice left hook to the body by “Chocolatito” with 25 seconds left. Another one crushes Sosa near the bell. It’s all Gonzalez.

Round 2

Gonzalez picks up where he left off at the end of the first; right in Sosa’s face. Sosa jabs as he backs up but they are of no use. Gonzalez tags him with a left to the face and then a right. Gonzalez is all over him, landing lefts and rights whenever he wants. Sosa is hurt by a left to the body a minute in and he’s already in trouble. Big left uppercut followed by a right cross drops Sosa to his knees. He’s up at six but in serious peril. Gonzalez swarms him and fells him again with a terrific left hook. He’s up again but the end is just about here. Gonzalez pours on the assault, landing a cascade of shots to the head and body.

Sosa tries to avoid them and cover up, but Gonzalez is as precise as a surgeon. Big right hand, left hook, right cross finally drop Sosa again and referee Raul Caiz Sr. intelligently stops the mugging. Gonzalez was absolutely sensational against Sosa, a quality veteran.

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe Jr.

Round 1

Golovkin comes right after Monroe, but he paws with the jab. Monroe moves back and to his right, not exactly enthused about engaging just yet. They trade jabs, but Monroe’s lefty jab hits it mark first. Monroe in rhythm with the jab. Finally, Golovkin nails him with a right hand a minute in and it shakes Monroe, who quickly clinches. Monroe backs away while Golovkin chases him down. GGG with another right hand, but it’s not as clean. Monroe backs himself into the ropes and then digs a left/right to the stomach. Golovkin comes back with another right, but it’s a glancing shot. Monroe opens up with a flurry but Golovkin cracks him with another right hand. Good action early on in the fight.

Round 2

Monroe goes right to the jab to start the stanza. Golovkin isn’t as aggressive as he paws with the jab as well. GGG goes to the body with a left hook, but Monroe absorbs it. Golovkin misses with a wild right hand and then pays for it with a jab to the grill. Monroe backs into a corner, paws with the jabs and then is countered by a monster of a left hook. He instantly stumbles forward and then down. He’s up and in serious peril. “The Mongoose” goes toe-to-toe to keep the pressing champ off but he can’t. A combo by Golovkin, capped by a sweeping right hand floors Monroe again. He’s up at eight and is allowed to continue. Monroe tags Golovkin with a nice uppercut but he can’t keep him away. Golovkin nails him again with the right and the challenger stumbles back. Monroe somehow survives the round.

Round 3

Monroe is on his bike immediately, not wanting to engage at all. Golovkin chases him down and slams a few shots to the body. Monroe backs into a corner and then clinches. Monroe finally wakes up and lands two hard rights to the ribs. Two more land on the champ’s body. Golovkin takes them all and then comes back with a right but Monroe takes it. Monroe is tough, standing right there and trading blows with his foe. A right hand by GGG is clean, but “The Mongoose” fires right back as best he can. Golovkin lands a hard straight right hand that snaps the challenger’s head back, but Monroe answers with two shots downstairs.

Round 4

The square off in the center of the ring and it’s Golovkin who is first to land. Monroe digs two shots to the gut after he eats a right hand. Monroe isn’t moving as much now; he’s opted to stand and trade with the knockout artist.. and he’s doing well. Golovkin is hit by several rights and left and suddenly Golovkin stops punching. Two more big shots to the face by Monroe, but then Golovkin waives him on for more. Monroe continues to throw shots, landing many of them to the head and body. Gennady lands a glancing right hand but then eats a right in return. Monroe is tagging the champ over and over, but nothing is hurting the Kazakhstani bomber. Very nice round for Monroe, who is suddenly alive and well in this fight.

Round 5

Monroe quickly goes to the jab as Golovkin walks forward. Big uppercut lands for Golovkin and it rocks Monroe. A follow-up right hand crashes on Monroe’s jaw, who is stepping in holes now. He is hurt but he’s firing back. Monroe continues to swing away, but Golovkin is walking through everything. Gennady again motions for Monroe to keep punching and then lands a nice left hook. Golovkin goes to the jab now and he looks like he’s slowing down. Monroe backs into the ropes, and Golovkin opens up. Monroe lets his hands fly, keeping the champ away. Monroe backs up, looking tired now, but he still is throwing shots to the head and body. Golovkin goes downstairs and counters a right to the face with a left to the head. Very good round.

Round 6

Monroe paws with several jabs early but then he’s rocked by an uppercut. He’s hurt badly and stumbles back into the ropes. Golovkin closes in and unloads a furious swarm, dropping “The Mongoose” again. Monroe is hurt and frustrated, thinking about staying down. He just barley beats Jack Reiss’ count and after the veteran ref asks him if he wants to continue twice, it appears as though Monroe says, “I’m done.” Reiss intelligently calls it off.
