Garcia Replaces Grice, Rematches Phan at UFC 136

Nam Phan will get his shot to set the record straight on Oct. 8, as he will once again meet Leonard Garcia in a featherweight clash at UFC 136.

UFC officials announced Wednesday that Garcia (Pictured) has agreed to replace the injured Matt Grice. Phan himself had originally joined the event as an injury replacement after Josh Grispi withdrew from his originally planned showdown with Grice.

Headlined by a lightweight title rematch pitting champion Frankie Edgar against the only man who has defeated him, Gray Maynard, UFC 136 will emanate from the Toyota Center in Houston. Also featuring a featherweight title defense by Jose Aldo against No. 1 contender Kenny Florian, the evening’s main draw will air live on pay-per-view.

Phan and Garcia originally met at “The Ultimate Fighter 12” finale in December. Though Phan consistently peppered Garcia with clean counter shots throughout the three-round affair, it was the aggressive Jackson’s MMA representative Garcia who took a split decision so controversial that it was dubbed Sherdog.com’s “Robbery of the Year.”

Phan has lost four of his last five contests. Following his controversial loss to Garcia, he was bested in a more clear-cut decision to former WEC champion Mike Brown, who earned a unanimous nod over the “TUF 12” alum at UFC 133 in August.

Known for his wild offense and exciting style, Garcia, 32, has split his last four bouts. Prior to his controversial win over Phan in his UFC debut, Garcia came out on top in another hard-fought split decision, edging out Chan Sung Jung at WEC 48 before falling to Mark Hominick later that year at WEC 51. Most recently, Garcia was beaten in a rematch with “The Korean Zombie” at UFC Fight Night 24 in March, submitting to a twister with only one second remaining in the second round.
