Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts Submits Application for Observer Status
The Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) has taken the
first major step towards international recognition, by submitting
its application to the Global Association of International Sport
Federations (GAISF).
On Thursday morning, the organization announced that it had filed an application for Observer Status with the GAISF. If granted, this would allow for GAMMA to be brought into the international sports federation fold of regulation and legitimacy on the global stage. Were GAMMA allowed to be part of the GAISF, it would be one step closer to its goal of recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In doing so, it would further the purpose of the organization to have mixed martial arts recognized as an Olympic sport. This organization from Amsterdam is composed of members from around the world, and is run by the current President Alexander Engelhardt.
In November, GAMMA partnered with One Championship to host an event in Singapore with upwards of 300 athletes spanning over 40 countries. The amateur combatants across all weight divisions, for men and women, vied for six-figure contracts and a one-year scholarship to train at Evolve MMA.
Of the partnership, Chairman and CEO of One Chatri Sityodtong said, "As the world's largest stage for martial arts, ONE Championship is a celebration of martial arts and its deep-rooted values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion. The sport of mixed martial arts is an incredible medium to unleash the greatness of humanity. ONE Championship's partnership with GAMMA is a testament to our commitment to giving all amateur athletes the support they need as they pursue a career in mixed martial arts, including opportunities to earn scholarships to train in the best gyms around the world, and the chance to showcase their talent on the most prestigious stage of global competition."
He concluded, "I fully support GAMMA's dedication to further developing the sport of mixed martial arts, and I'm excited to see it one day be recognized as an official sport in the Olympics."
