Mauricio Rua has withdrawn from his UFC on Fox 19 clash against Rashad Evans due to injury. As a result, Glover Teixeira will replace “Shogun” on the April 16 card in Tampa, Fla.
Promotion officials announced the change on Wednesday. The nature of Rua’s injury was not disclosed. UFC on Fox 19 takes place at Amalie Arena and is headlined by a lightweight showdown between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The main card airs on the Fox Network. Evans and Teixeira were originally supposed to meet in February 2015, but an injury Teixeira scrapped that contest.
Teixeira enters the contest on a two-fight winning streak. The Brazilian submitted Ovince St. Preux at UFC Fight Night Nashville in August before scoring a technical knockout triumph over Patrick Cummins at UFC Fight Night “Belfort vs. Henderson 3” this past November. The former light heavyweight title challenger is 7-2 during his promotional tenure.
Evans, meanwhile, returned to action for the first time in nearly two years at UFC 192, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Ryan Bader last October. Prior to that bout, the ex-205 pound champion hadn’t competed since November 2013, when he stopped Chael Sonnen in the first round at UFC 167.
