Grice Injured, Phan Awaiting New Opponent for UFC 136

A planned UFC 136 contest between Matt Grice and Nam Phan will not go down as expected, as Grice has been forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury.

The promotion announced the news Wednesday but did not announce a replacement for Grice. Phan (Pictured) was originally tapped as a stand-in for an injured Josh Grispi, who withdrew from his showdown with Grice in August.

Headlined by a lightweight title rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, UFC 136 goes down Oct. 8 from the Toyota Center in Houston. Also featuring a featherweight championship bout between Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian, the evening’s main draw will air live on pay-per-view.

Grice is currently in his second run with the UFC, posting a record of 1-4 in the world’s largest promotion. After being released by the UFC in 2009 following consecutive defeats to lightweights Matt Veach and Shannon Gugerty, the 30-year-old rattled off a string of four wins to earn another opportunity inside the Octagon. Grice fell to Ricardo Lamas in his UFC return, losing by technical knockout in his featherweight debut at UFC Live 4 on June 26.

Nearly a 10-year pro, Phan has lost four of his last five contests. The 28-year-old joined the UFC after a stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 12,” falling to Leonard Garcia in a widely-disputed split decision at season finale in December. Phan followed that contentious loss with a more clear-cut defeat, as he was outpointed by Mike Brown on all three judges’ scorecards at UFC 133 last month.
