Lightweight slugger Jorge Gurgel will make his return to the cage Aug. 12 at Strikeforce Challengers 18.
Gurgel confirmed his participation Wednesday via Twitter; the Ohio-based fighter’s opponent has not yet been announced. The Showtime-televised event will take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and will mark the second “Challengers” card held in the city.
Gurgel was last seen submitting Billy Vaughan with a guillotine choke in March. Though the victory snapped a two-fight skid, the 34-year-old has still lost four of his last six fights. Prior to joining Strikeforce, Gurgel competed seven times for the UFC, posting a record of 3-4 during his stint in the Octagon.
Known for his wide-open style and durability, Gurgel holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu but often chooses to keep his fights standing. Despite this, “J.G.” holds 10 of his 14 career victories by submission. A nine-year veteran of the sport, the Brazilian’s August 2010 loss to K.J. Noons marks the only time Gurgel has been knocked out.
