Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Kell Brook

Round 1

Brook paws with a few jabs to start the round before tagging “GGG” with an overhand right, though it’s not hard. Golovkin whiffs on a wild right hook, forcing Brook to back off. Sharp straight right to the jaw from Brook during an exchange. A double left to the body, followed by a left hook to the head rocks Brook badly. He recovers and then tags the middleweight champ with a combo upstairs. Golovkin is taking his time, setting up the power. Brook backs into the ropes but he’s able to avoid the incoming assault. Brook gets inside and whips him with a right uppercut and it buzzes “GGG,” which allows the Brit to follow up. Great action in the first. 10-9 Golovkin

Round 2

Golovkin storms out of his corner and tags the Brit with a few stiff jabs. Brook backs away and then eats a left hook, though it’s not terribly hard. Brook digs a left uppercut to the body and then one to the head, but “GGG” isn’t bothered by them. Brook is sticking and moving at the midway point behind the jab. Brook deflects a powerful left hook before landing one cleanly of his own. Hard left uppercut to the mouth by Brook, followed by a right to the head. Golovkin is stopped momentarily but Brook rips him with a series of shots to the melon. Brook moves away at the end. 10-9 Brook

Round 3

Golovkin storms out of his corner and tags the Brit with a few stiff jabs. Brook backs away and then eats a left hook, though it’s not terribly hard. Brook digs a left uppercut to the body and then one to the head, but “GGG” isn’t bothered by them. Brook is sticking and moving at the midway point behind the jab. Round 4

There’s a little bit of swelling under Brook’s right eye to start the fourth. Brook backs into a corner, but Golovkin’s incoming flurry is blocked. Brook backs away and sneaks a left uppercut in under his foe’s guard. Golovkin lands a pair of nice jabs, but brook returns the favor. Brook backs into the ropes and eats a right, but he shakes it off. They tie each other up a few times with a minute left and when they separate, Brooks swallows another right. Golovkin is throwing all arm punches late; he looks like he’s gassing out already. Brook tags him with a sharp left hook near the bell but it’s not enough to win the round. 10-9 Golovkin

Round 5

Golovkin comes out with the jab and left hook, but Brook is able to fend them off. Kell backs into the ropes again, which allows “GGG” to tee off. Most of Gennady’s punches miss or are blocked, but Brook serves up nothing in return. Brook bounces off the ropes and rips Golovkin with a right to the head, backing him off. Brook is slowing down big time; he looks hurt with 80 seconds left. Golovkin swarms him and a towel is tossed into the ring. There is some confusion but the fight is over. The crowd is angrily booing what happened and Brook is not pleased, either. It’s an official TKO win for Golovkin, his 23rd in a row.
