Curtis Blaydes wil get the opportunity to take climb another rung on the heavyweight ladder when he faces Alistair Overeem at UFC 225.
The promotion announced the matchup on Wednesday. UFC 225 takes place at the United Center in Chicago on June 9 and also includes a flyweight showdown between Joseph Benavidez and Sergio Pettis as well as a strawweight tilt pitting Claudia Gadelha against Carla Esparza.
Overeem will return to action for the first time since suffering a devastating knockout loss to Francis Ngannou at UFC 218 on Dec. 2. Prior to that, “The Reem” had scored consecutive victories over Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt. The 37-year-old Dutchman challenged for heavyweight gold at UFC 203, falling to Stipe Miocic via first-round knockout.
Blaydes, meanwhile, announced himself as a new player in the division with a dominant decision win over Hunt in his most recent outing at UFC 221. The 27-year-old Chicago native is unbeaten in his last five Octagon appearances.
