Roy Nelson will lock horns with Alexander Volkov in a heavyweight duel at UFC on Fox 24 on April 15.
The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the pairing on Tuesday. UFC on Fox 24 takes place at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., and is headlined by a flyweight championship bout between Demetrious Johnson and Wilson Reis. The evening’s main card and part of the preliminary draw will air on the Fox Network, with early prelims streaming on UFC Fight Pass.
Nelson last appeared at UFC Fight Night 95, where he earned a second-round knockout victory over Antonio Silva on Sept. 24. “Big Country” was initially suspended for nine months and fined $24,000 by the Brazilian Superior Court Justice of MMA for kicking referee John McCarthy after the bout for he deemed was a late stoppage. Nelson would issue a public apology that led to a reduced suspension of six months and fine of $13,700. The International Fight League veteran is 9-9 in the UFC, with all but one of those victories coming by way of knockout.
A former Bellator MMA titlist, Volkov made his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 99, where he garnered a split verdict over Timothy Johnson on Nov. 19. The 28-year-old Moscow native has now won three straight fights after exiting Bellator on a two-bout skid in 2015. Volkov owns a 27-6 career mark, including 18 triumphs via KO or TKO.
