Roy Nelson will lock horns with Derrick Lewis in a featured heavyweight bout at a UFC Fight Night event on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Ultimate Fighting Championship officials on Friday announced the matchup, the two men having become quasi-rivals in recent weeks through social media exchanges and interviews.
Nelson is fresh off a February victory over Jared Rosholt in a fight he badly needed to win. The Las Vegas native had dropped three in a row and five of six, but the unanimous decision against Rosholt kept him afloat in the UFC. Lewis, meanwhile, has been one of the heavyweight division’s hottest fighters, as “The Black Beast” has rattled off three straight wins. His most recent triumph resulted in a first-round knockout against Gabriel Gonzaga on April 10.
UFC Fight Night “Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez” will serve as a key piece to the organization’s International Fight Week. The event will be headlined by UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, as he defends his title against Eddie Alvarez.
