Hendricks-Pierce Targeted for UFC 133 in Philadelphia

A battle between two powerful wrestlers is being put together for UFC 133, as Johny Hendricks (Pictured) will likely meet Mike Pierce at the Aug. 6 event. Sherdog.com confirmed the bout with a source close to the fight on Thursday following an initial report from MMAJunkie.com.

Though not officially announced by the promotion, UFC 133 is expected to go down from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It will feature a pivotal light heavyweight confrontation between Phil Davis and former titleholder Rashad Evans.

Following a decorated wrestling career at Oklahoma State University, Hendricks stormed onto the MMA scene in 2007. After winning his first three fights, the 27-year-old debuted with the WEC in 2008, rattling off back-to-back victories before taking his first steps into the UFC’s Octagon the following year. The welterweight won four straight bouts in the UFC before running into Rick Story at “The Ultimate Fighter 12” Finale in 2010, dropping a competitive unanimous decision to Story in the first loss of his career. Hendricks rebounded from the defeat in March, however, knocking out Anthony Waldburger in just 95 seconds at UFC Fight Night 24.

Pierce also wrestled in college, as the Oregonian represented Portland State University on the mat. The 30-year-old made his Octagon debut in 2009 while riding a six-fight winning streak. Though he lost on points to perennial contender Jon Fitch, Pierce gave an excellent account of himself in their bout. “Megatron” came back from that defeat with three straight wins, besting Amilcar Alves and Julio Paulino in 2010 before knocking out Kenny Robertson at UFC 126 in February.
