Herman-Frye Headline Shark Fights 6
Saturday, September 12, 2009
by Brian Knapp (bknapp@sherdog.com)

Mixed martial arts pioneer Don Frye will throw leather with EliteXC veteran Dave Herman in the featured bout at Shark Fights 6 “Stars and Stripes” this Saturday at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas.

Frye, who turns 44 in November, appears to have plenty left in the gas tank. The popular UFC and Pride Fighting Championships veteran has recorded four wins in his last six fights and has finished three of his opponents in that span inside the first round. Though he won two UFC tournaments and reached the final in another, Frye remains one of the more underappreciated competitors of his time. Known for his trademark mustache and quick wit, he posted a stellar 8-1 record inside the Octagon and debuted with a record-setting knockout when he smashed Thomas Ramirez in eight seconds at UFC 8 nearly 14 years ago.

An intriguing prospect, Herman rebounded nicely from his January defeat to Mu Bae Choi; the loss snapped a 13-fight winning streak to start his career. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound heavyweight stopped Josh Barnes on first-round knees and punches at a Bellator Fighting Championships show in May. Victories against UFC veterans Ron Waterman and Kerry Schall anchor his resume.

In addition to the Frye-Herman main event, Shark Fights 6 will feature a matchup between “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 alum Gerald Harris and UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting castoff Nissen Osterneck. Based out of Arizona Combat Sports, Harris has rattled off six consecutive wins, five of them finishes, since a technical knockout loss to Benji Radach in August. 2007.
