Ishii Disqualified in X-1 Exhibition; Clay Submits Wolff

HONOLULU -- Japanese heavyweight prospect Satoshi
Ishii was disqualified in an exhibition match on the undercard
of X-1 World Events “Nations Collide” on Friday at the Neal S.
Blaisdell Arena on Friday.
After knocking down Myles Tynanes at the first-round bell, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist failed to stop punching his downed foe despite the referee’s attempts to halt the action.
“What happened was the knockdown occurred, the buzzer went off, I
jumped in to stop the match and, basically, [Ishii] kept going,
throwing the punches,” referee Steve Miyamoto told Sherdog.com. “He
probably got maybe six or seven more punches in, and I’m basically
standing in the middle of that. I couldn’t get [Ishii] off; he was
pushing me over to get into it.
“I’m not exactly sure if it was even a language barrier where I couldn’t stop [Ishii],” Miyamoto added. “By me jumping in between and holding [Ishii] back as hard as I could, [it] kind of tells me that he had no intention of stopping. I can understand that [fighters] don’t hear a lot in the heat of the battle, but somebody jumping in front of you or pulling you back and yelling right in your face to stop should basically tell you to knock it off, it’s over, the round is done.”
Clay -- who spent nine years living on the island of Maui before moving back to his home state of Colorado in 2009 -- looked impressive in the bout. He kept pressure on the champion and forced his back against the cage, where he unloaded with uppercuts, elbows and knees before ending the fight with a submission 4:06 into the third round.
“He was allowing me to control his head,” Clay said. “When I was coming in, I was throwing elbows over the top, and I guess I caught him with a good knee in middle and he fell because of it. I just kept top position; that’s something I’ve been doing in jiu-jitsu. Instead of being like a spider crawling all over him, I just let them roll underneath me and let my hips hover above them. I was doing that, and I found myself in mount. He turned for the armbar and I just punched and punched, and he gave me the arm. It worked really well.”
Meanwhile, eight fighters competed in what served as the first round of a tournament to crown a new X-1 light heavyweight champion.
Russian Vitalius Shemetov dazzled, as he needed only 1:31 to knockout Pride Fighting Championships and K-1 veteran Shungo Oyama. Another standout was South Korean Sang Soo Lee, who knocked out Gracie Barra Phoenix fighter Daniel Madrid 3:06 into the second round.
Shemetov and Lee will advance to the semifinals on Sept. 11, along with Poai Suganuma -- a unanimous decision winner over Greg Schmitt -- and Cesar Gracie protégé Roy Boughton, who submitted Adam Akau via guillotine choke 2:57 into round one.
Elsewhere, Russell Doane captured the X-1 state bantamweight title, as he stopped Riley Dutro with a vicious series of punches and elbows on the ground. The end came 4:33 into round one.
The event also marked the professional debut of standout local female fighter Raquel Paaluhi, daughter of David Paaluhi -- the man who won Hawaii’s first mixed martial arts tournament in January 1996. “Rocky” held tradition, as she defeated the San Jose, Calif.-based Jenny Trujillo via unanimous decision.
