Jake Paul has his next challenge, in the form of the younger half-brother of the heavyweight champion, Tommy Fury.
“I started my professional boxing career less than two years ago on January 30th, 2020,” said Paul in a statement. “Four fights, three pay-per-views, two as the headliner, and one sold-out arena, I’m looking forward to my toughest challenge yet and continuing to prove the critics wrong. Fight a real boxer they’ve said, and that is exactly what I’m doing. An undefeated boxer from the legendary Fury bloodline. However, this one is more than just boxing for me. It’s for America and showing the world there is no other country that gives you the opportunity to achieve whatever you set your mind to. It’s for every young person who has a dream and dedicates their life to achieving it. On December 18th I’m continuing to fulfill my dreams and turning a Fury into a Fumbles.”
Paul, who gained fame from YouTube doing pranks and rapping, while first stepping over to the boxing sphere in 2020. His first appearance saw him knock out fellow YouTuber Ali Loui Al-Fakhri, also known as AnEsonGib, that January. Coming back that November, his second outing led to a crushing knockout of former basketball player Nate Robinson. At 2-0 as a pro, he challenged retired MMA fighter Ben Askren to a boxing match, and he knocked out Askren in the first round in April. Keeping to his path of aging MMA fighters, he faced Woodley in August, and he captured a split decision over the ex-Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight king. Each of his four wins came against men making their pro boxing debuts.
Fury is relatively more experienced as a pro boxer, with seven wins since participating in the sweet science in 2018. Although the 22-year-old Brit nicknamed “TNT” celebrates more wins, his level of competition can be questioned. Amassing a 7-0 record to date, his foes have combined for a record of 14-175-3. Three of those victories came against men that were 0-26-2, 0-11 and 0-9 at the time he fought them. Fury knocked out all three within two rounds. This will be Fury’s first eight-round bout, while Paul has had his last two booked for eight rounds.
It was discussed that a rematch with Woodley would be Paul’s next fight, on the condition that Woodley get Paul’s name tattooed on him. Woodley did allegedly get the tattoo on his middle finger, but that was not enough for Paul to take the rematch.
