Jingnan Xiong Puts Away Samara Santos in One Championship ‘Beyond the Horizon’ Headliner

Jingnan Xiong retained her One Championship women’s strawweight title with a dominant performance against Samara Santos Cunha to set up the biggest fight of her career. With her performance at “ Beyond the Horizon,” Xiong will now go on to meet atomweight champion Angela Lee in Singapore this November.

Xiong looked immediately to assert dominance over her Brazilian opponent on Saturday at Baoshan Sports Center in Shanghai, China, who was making her One Championship debut. Marching forward in a boxing-like stance, throwing out looping overhead punches, the champion seemed like she wanted to finish the fight quickly. However it was Santos who had the initial success, albeit briefly when she took the back of the strawweight queen.

However, Cunha was unable to inflict any damage and eventually Xiong’s superior stand up wore her foe down and with just over a minute gone in the third round the 30-year-old Chinese fighter got the TKO stoppage that she had been building towards from the start with a spinning back kick that appeared to graze the liver. The official time of the tap from strikes came at 1:22.

In other action, Amir Khan submitted Honorio Banario with a rear-naked choke at 4:34 minutes of the opening round; Edward Kelly beat Christian Lee by disqualification when Lee executed an illegal suplex at 2:21 minutes of the first frame; Muhammad Aiman tapped Chen Lei with a rear-naked choke at 4:35 minutes of the second stanza; Elipitua Siregar iced Phat Soda with a swarm of leather at the 2:30 mark of round one.
