Joe Rogan: CM Punk Should be Fighting in Amateur Event Rather than UFC PPV

Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight Phil Brooks, better known as “CM Punk” is set to take on Mike Jackson as part of the main card of UFC 225 on June 9 and the decision to keep both fighters on the card over established fighters is not sitting well with Joe Rogan.

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan believes it’s crazy the UFC still have this fight on the main card after a key heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem vs. Curtis Blaydes was relegated to the prelims in favor of Megan Anderson vs. Holly Holm.

Punk, who is a former World Wrestling Entertainment champion, had his first fight inside the Octagon in September 2016 against the young prospect Micky Gall. Punk was completely outclassed in the fight before Gall eventually locked in a rear naked choke and finished the fight in the opening round. Punk (0-1) will now take one Jackson (0-1) who also lost to Gall via submission.

Rogan said on a recent edition of his podcast that he understands Punk is there to help sell the pay-per-view but believes Punk and Jackson don’t even deserve to be on Dana White’s Contender series (via Damon Martin):

“It shouldn’t even be on the ‘Tuesday Night Contender’ show. It should be in some amateur event somewhere. That’s really what they are. They’re guys learning how to compete. They’re in the first fight on the pay-per-view. That’s f–king crazy.”

Rogan is not the only one who has spoken out about CM Punk earning his way into the UFC, especially on the pay-per-view cards over fighters who have earnt their shot in the organisation. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell recently told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour last week that he didn’t agree why CM Punk should be on a main event card let alone up against someone who also has a losing record in Jackson.

UFC 225 is a stacked card featuring two title fights. In the main event, Australian middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is set to defend the belt against Yoel Romero in a rematch. The co-main event will feature an interim welterweight title clash between former lightweight title holder Rafael dos Anjos and the controversial Colby Covington.
