For the second time in 2016, John McCarthy will be the third man in the cage for the main event of an Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view card.
McCarthy was selected as the referee for the heavyweight championship rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez at UFC 196 during a Nevada Athletic Commission hearing on Tuesday. UFC 196 takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Feb. 6. Werdum defeated Velasquez at UFC 188 capture heavyweight gold in June 2015.
McCarthy recently oversaw the UFC 195 welterweight title headliner between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit, which took place in Las Vegas on Jan. 2. Lawler won the fight via split decision.
Meanwhile, Sal D’Amato, Marcos Rosales and Glenn Trowbridge were selected as the judges for the Werdum-Velasquez matchup. All three judges made their first cageside appearances for the Las Vegas-based promotion at UFC 195.
