Johny Hendricks Believes Georges St. Pierre Will Fight Again

By Staff Dec 20, 2013

Georges St. Pierre is taking a break from MMA, but Johny Hendricks believes he’ll eventually find his way back to fighting.

“Deep down inside of me, do I think GSP is coming back? Yeah, I do,” Hendricks told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show on Wednesday.

The two top-ranked welterweights went the distance Nov. 16 at UFC 167. St. Pierre came away from the grueling battle with a controversial split decision, but he’s since relinquished his UFC title to take a leave of absence. At this point it’s not clear if he’ll ever fight again, but Hendricks is confident he will.

“Whenever I quit wrestling, it took me about five months and I was like, ‘Dude, I really want to wrestle,’” Hendricks said. “That’s just the competitor in me that I still wanted to be an elite wrestler, but I transferred over to MMA, so I had something to transfer over to, to keep myself motivated and push myself to the limits. I don’t know what GSP’s going to transfer over to, but if he doesn’t transfer over to something that keeps his drive there … I know myself -- I’d go insane. So I know that’s what’s going to happen is he’ll probably take five, six months, maybe even a year off, and he’ll have the itch to come back and start training again, and once that happens, he’ll be back.”

In the meantime, Hendricks is set to meet Robbie Lawler for the vacant welterweight championship March 15 at UFC 171. Certainly he’s focused on Lawler for now, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about St. Pierre.

“If he does come back,” Hendricks said, “I’m hoping that I’m there to be able to meet him.”
