Despite last week’s confirmation from UFC officials, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira will not square off in the main event of UFC 169.
White went on to say that the timing of the fight “didn’t work out” and that the UFC’s public relations team “jumped the gun” in announcing the match. The UFC has since noted on its official website that neither fighter is injured, and the 205-pound title bout “will likely occur sometime in March.”
Jones is only three weeks removed from a grueling, five-round title defense against Sweden’s Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165. Despite being taken the distance and facing the stiffest opposition of his UFC title reign, 26-year-old “Bones” emerged with a unanimous decision, his sixth consecutive title defense.
Teixeira, 33, is currently riding a 20-fight winning streak, including five straight since joining the UFC in May 2012. This year proved a banner one for the Marco Ruas pupil, as Teixeira took out Quinton Jackson, James Te Huna and Ryan Bader to solidify his spot as No. 1 contender to Jones’ belt.
