Joseph Benavidez will look to remain amongst the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s flyweight contenders in a newly announced bout against Dustin Ortiz.
UFC officials Tuesday announced the contest, which will be part of a Nov. 22 UFC Fight Night card at Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. The company also revealed that a women’s strawweight matchup between Kailin Curran and Paige VanZant previously scheduled for Oct. 4 has been shifted to the Austin event due to a VanZant injury.
Benavidez has only lost twice under the UFC banner, both times to 125-pound champion Demetrious Johnson. The former World Extreme Cagefighting competitor was last in action at UFC 172, dispelling of Tim Elliot via guillotine choke in the first round. In all, the 30-year-old has finished 15 of his fights before reaching the judges’ scorecards.
Ortiz has been involved in three consecutive fights which have ended in split decisions. The last two, have been positive outcomes, defeating Ray Borg and Justin Scoggins. The Roufusport product has only tasted defeat once since joining the UFC in 2013, a loss to John Moraga.
