Lightweight Diego Magdaleno (26-1, 10 KOs) dominated Oscar Bravo (21-4, 9 KOs) and won a lopsided eight-round unanimous decision (80-71 twice, 79-72); super featherweight Oscar Valdez (11-0, 11 KOs) nabbed a TKO at the end of the sixth round when Noel Echevarria (11-3, 6 KOs) didn’t get off his stool; welterweight Brad Solomon (22-0, 8 KOs) won a unanimous eight-round decision over Armen Ovsepyan (14-4, 11 KOs) via scores of 78-74 and 79-73 twice; super bantamweight Raul Hirales (22-2-1 with 10 KOs) knocked Ernesto Guerrero (18-10, 10 KOs) with an uppercut at 2:31 of the third; featherweight Gabino Saez (12-0-2, 8 KOs) knocked out Felix Perez (8-6, 3 KOs) in the third with a perfect left hook, ending it at 1:29 of the round; super featherweight Pedro Duran (6-0, 4 KOs) blew away Dominic Coca (8-8, 2 KOs) in just 69 seconds; featherweight Edwin Solis (6-2-3, 4 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO (1:07) over Yuri Trogiianov; welterweight Zachary Wohlman (8-1-1, 1 KO) won a four-round unanimous decision over Eddie Cordova (4-8-1, 1 KO) with scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37; super lightweight Cameron Krael (5-5-2) won a four-round majority decision over Manuel Lopez (5-1, 4 KOs) via tallies of 38-38 and 39-37 twice.

Coming into what was to be the biggest test of his career, Ukrainian junior welterweight Viktor Postol was known primarily as a cutesy type of boxer with little power. He had never lost as a pro and rugged veteran Selcuk Aydin was expected to give him one heck of a test. As it turned out, Postol was brilliant and became the first man ever to knock out the Turkish brawler, thanks mostly to him joining the popular Wildcard Gym in Hollywood and having Freddie Roach in his corner.

Postol used his six-inch reach advantage to stay away and continuously turn Aydin while he jabbed. Postol also tore into his opponent’s body with vicious hooks, which slowed Aydin down considerably. Usually a high volume fighter, Aydin was reduced to throwing virtually one-punch attacks for most of the contest. Postol threw over a thousand punches and though he seemed to be rocked in the first from a left to the head and again in the eighth from a hook to the liver, Postol was in complete control until the end.

Finally, after Postol unloaded a dizzying ten-punch flurry, he upped the ante with another onslaught to the head and body. A right hand buckled Aydin’s knees and the off-balance Turk left his jaw wide open. As soon as his gloves dropped, Postol delivered a textbook right uppercut, sending Aydin (26-3, 19 KOs) folding backward over his knees and flat onto his back. Referee Raul Caiz immediately halted the bout, officially ending it at 2:52 of the 11th round. The win allowed Postol to improve to 26-0 with 11 KOs.

Round 1

Marquez paws with a left jab but it’s futile. Alvarado backs away and hints at a jab. Marquez throws a loopy left hook but it’s blocked. Left jab by Alvarado misses. Juan Manuel jabs to the body and head. Nice left-right by the Mexican great but it’s partially blocked. Hard right to the face by Marquez, followed by a three-punch combo to the ribs. Marquez is bobbing and weaving and looks to be warmed up; Alvarado still looks stiff and cold. Alvarado is in a shell and waiting to attack. Jab by Marquez. Another. Round 2

Marquez fires two left jabs to start the round. Hard left jab to the body by Marquez. Juan Manual is jabbing nicely while Alvarado just blocks. Alvarado backing away in a tight shell, not letting his hands go at all. Alvarado finally throws a slow left hook, but he’s countered quickly by a left and a right. Alvarado throws a left hook but misses. Marquez counters with a right hand. Jab-jab by Marquez. Hard right hand to the temple by Marquez catches Mike’s attention. Another. There is some swelling under Alvarado’s right eye. Nice right hand by Alvarado. Jab-jab-hook to the body by “Dinimita.” Hard left to the body/left to the head by Alvarado but the one to the face just misses by an inch.

Round 3

The trade jabs to start the frame. Marquez bouncing up and down. Alvarado fires a right hand down the pipe but misses. Nice left/right by Marquez breaks the guard. Alvarado switches gears and starts walking down Marquez. Alvarado fires a left and right and they are nasty shots, but they miss. Marquez answers with a left, but Alvarado counters with a right. Hard left/right by Marquez. Thudding left to the body from the Mexican. Alvarado backs away and regroups. Huge left hook misses from Alvarado and Marquez makes him pay with a three-punch combo. They trade hard left hooks but both shots are glancing at best. Marquez jabs to the body but eats a left as he comes in. They flurry briefly until the bell. Close round.

Round 4

Left jab/left hook by Alvarado right off the bat. They trade left jabs. Marquez counters a right hand with a left hook but it’s partially blocked. Hard left to the body from the American. Marquez crashes a hard straight right hand through the guard during an exchange. Marquez fires a left hook that lands. Alvarado took it well. Punishing left hook to the body by Marquez. Nice left/right to the head from Marquez as Alvarado comes in. Awesome three-punch combo to the face by “Dinimita.” Alvarado backs up and regroups. Marquez just misses a nasty right hand counter. Alvarado throws four shots to the head and body but the miss. Alvarado tries to fire but he eats two more clean shots as he comes in. The handspeed is starting to really show its head.

Round 5

Alvarado’s corner is a bit frantic between rounds, yelling him to make Marquez “show his age.” Alvarado tries to bully his way in but Marquez quickly ducks out of the way. Hard left hook to the liver by Marquez. Alvarado fires a left jab to the face. Marquez delivers a right hand to the jaw. Beautiful right to the head/left to the body by Marquez. Left uppercut/right hook to the body by Marquez. Juan Manuel has found a perfect rhythm and is picking his foe apart. Alvarado eats a left to the head. A right. A left to the body. Marquez is boxing his ears off but Alvarado continues to apply the pressure. Jab-jab-jab by Marquez snaps Alvarado’s head back. Nice left to the cheek by Alvarado late. Marquez eats a clean right hand during an exchange but he pops Mike with three of his own.

Round 6

Stiff jab from Alvarado opens the round. Alvarado rushes and clinches. They separate but Mike eats a jab. Alvarado keeps switching between conventional and southpaw at a distance but he does nothing with the switching. Big right hand misses by Alvarado. Marquez is backing away nicely and jabbing when he needs to. Alvarado plugs away with short uppercuts on the inside. Hard four-punch combo by Marquez. Right hand lands by Marquez. Crushing left hook to the ribs by Marquez. Alvarado surges in but eats a clean right cross. They trade blows in the center of the ring, but Marquez lands most of his shots cleanly. Alvarado keeps swinging away but Marquez makes him miss and makes him pay repeatedly.

Round 7

Alvarado’s corner is again yelling at him to the aggressive, young man. They are screaming about how old Marquez is. Alvarado looks frustrated and worried for the first time. Marquez jabs to start the frame. Alvarado fires three right hands but they are blocked. They trade jabs. Marquez backs away and turns to his left, jabbing at Alvarado. Not much action early on as Alvarado seems a bit hesitant to throw. Hard right uppercut by Marquez rakes Mike’s head. Left hook by Juan Manuel. Alvarado walks right threw them but he eats four punches to the head and body. Alvarado misses a right uppercut and Marquez makes him pay with a left/right/left to the face. Alvarado’s face is starting to swell up.

Round 8

Jab by Marquez. Alvarado statuesque for the first 40 seconds of the round. Marquez cracks him with a right hand as he avoids the left hook. Right to the head/left to the body by Marquez. Alvarado tries to throw his hands, but Marquez lands again and backs away. Alvarado looks very gun shy right now. Hard overhand right by Marquez. Hard right/left to the face followed by an overhand right stops Alvarado right in his tracks. Big left hook misses by Mike. Straight right by Marquez has backs up. Alvarado’s corning telling him he needs a knockout to win and to let everything go. Alvarado stalks him to open the stanza and jabs his way in, but Marquez thwarts the attack. Double right hand to the jaw by Marquez. Marquez backing away and jabbing. They briefly clinch. Hard left uppercut/left hook by Alvarado snaps Marquez’ head back. Marquez returns the favor with a left uppercut on the chin. Mile High misses with a left/right. Jab-jab-right by Marquez. Nice left hook to the body by Marquez. Replays show that Marquez clearly did not go down. Proper call by Russell. Alvarado storms out of his corner and attacks Marquez, but “Dinimita” avoids the onslaught. Jab by Marquez. Hard right hand up top by the Mexican great. Alvarado misses with a huge right hand by inches. Marquez is backing away just enough to stay safe but he’s right there to fight. Alvarado has 90 seconds to score a knockout. Left hand by Mile High Mike. Alvarado throws eight punches while Marquez is trapped along the ropes but they mostly miss. Big right hand by Marquez late. Hard right/left/right by Marquez. They exchange again. Marquez snaps his foe’s head back with a brilliant left/right/left to the face. Right by Alvarado is answered by an even bigger one from Marquez at the bell.
