Koch-Brookins Booked for Sept. 17 UFC in New Orleans

Rising 145-pound prospect Erik Koch has been tasked with welcoming “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins back to the featherweight division.

UFC officials announced Saturday that “verbal agreements are in place” for Koch (Pictured) and Brookins to meet Sept. 17 at UFC “Battle on the Bayou.” The Bud Light-sponsored event is expected to air live on Spike TV from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

The fight joins a pair of previously announced middleweight contests on the card, as Jason MacDonald will face Alan Belcher, and “TUF 11” winner Court McGee will square off against Dongi Yang.

Koch, 22, confirmed his reputation as an up-and-comer to watch in his UFC debut on March 19, when the Roufusport fighter earned UFC 128’s “Knockout of the Night” bonus for his first-round pasting of Rafael Assuncao. An import from the World Extreme Cagefighting merger, Koch had previously compiled a 3-1 WEC mark, including another bonus-grabbing knockout of Francisco Rivera in November. The only blemish on Koch’s 12-1 ledger came in a March 2010 decision loss to current top contender Chad Mendes.

Brookins has not fought since winning the 12th season of “TUF” at lightweight in December, having seen bouts with John Makdessi and Jeremy Stephens both scrapped due to a recurring eye injury. The Florida-based 25-year-old was a one-time WEC combatant, falling via third-round TKO to now-UFC featherweight ruler Jose Aldo in November 2008. Brookins’ record of 12-3 includes wins over fellow UFC talent Yves Jabouin, Bellator veteran Luis Palomino, and M-1 lightweight champ Jose Figueroa.
