Bellator 47 Results and Play-by-Play

Alka Matewa vs. Alex Ricci

Round 1
Ricci lands the first two significant blows to open the bout, an overhand right and a kick to the body. Matewa responds with a right of his own. The two Thai stylists are content to trade until Ricci shoots an unexpected double and puts Matewa on his back in half guard. Matewas scrambles but Riccis attains the mount. Matewas powers out but is caught but eats a knee to the sternum as he rises. Matewa gets Ricci down to the mat but in no time, Ricci reverses and works with punches from within Matewa’s full guard. Ricci lays back looking for an ankle, but Matewa makes him pay with a solid right hand and Ricci releases the hold. Matewa now in top position lands a few punches before the round ends. Sherdog.com scores the opening frame 10-9 for Alex Ricci.

Round 2
Matewa misses with an right hook and the two clinch. A hard knee up the middle scores for Matewa as Ricci hits the mat, but quickly rises to his feet only to be caught by a left hook. Ricci shakes off the damage and puts Matewa on his back against the cage and fires a hard knee to the body of Matewa. Ricci in half guards lands elbow and moves to mount. Ricci begins dropping strike after strike to Matewa as he attempts to cover up. Matewa rolls over and Ricci continues to pound away. Referee Josh Rosenthal has seen enough and calls a halt to the contest at 2:40 of the second round.

Daniel Langbeen vs. William Romero

Round 1
The fighters quickly clinch, but stall out, forcing referee Josh Rosenthal to separate them. They break, and romero lands a hard right cross. Romero closes the distance and takes Langbeen down with a body lock, standing over his foe Romero lands a few kicks to the leg of Langbeen until Rosenthal stands them up. Langbeen is telegraphing his shots as Romero easily blocks another left hook from the American. Romero gets a trip takedown and drops a right hand down on Langbeen followed by more kicks to the legs. The bell sounds to end the first. Sherdog.com sees the opening frame 10-9 for Will Romero.

Round 2
A head kick from Romero narrowly misses to open the second. Langbeen flashes two jabs and eats a hard low kick from Romero. Langbeen attempts a takedown off a missed Romero right hook but it’s Romero who lands in top position. Langbeen locks up the rubber guard, but Romero breaks free and lands two hard punches. Romero stands up and again, kicks at Langbeen’s legs until Josh Rosenthal invites them back to their feet. Both fighters miss with wild hooks. Langbeen comes forward with a double jab followed by an right hook, nothing significant lands. Langbeen fakes with a jumping knee and fires another jab. Hard low kick from Romero gets a reaction from the crowd before the horn. Sherdog.com sees another frame 10-9 for Will Romero.

Round 3
Romero leads with a low kick followed by a right hook and immediately takes Langbeen down and stands over his opponent. Josh Rosenthal wastes no time in bringing the fighters back to their feet. A three-punch combination with a knee mixed in lands for Romero and they clinch against the cage. Langbeen briefly thinks about a guillotine decides to drop levels attempting to take Romero down. They are in a stalemate against the fence. Langbeen attempts to drag Romero to the mat but basically pulls guard. Romero takes his back and threatens with a choke but Langbeen escapes now finding himself in Romero’s guard where he lands a few elbows, his first real offense in the fight. Langbeen is being patient, but the Michigan native is running out of time. Langbeen stands and invites Romero to his feet and attempts to catch him on the way up as time expires. Sherdog.com has it a clean sweep: another 10-9 round for Will Romero, and the fight 30-27 for Romero overall.

Official result: Judge Pasquale Procopio has it 29-28, while Jason Rodgers and Frank Jackson have it 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Will Romero.

Jesse Gross vs. Alexandre Bezerra

Round 1
A Right hand from Bezerra finds the mark early and he follows it up with a double-leg takedown, taking the back from Gross almost immediately. Bezerra is looking for the rear-naked choke, and he sinks it just below the chin, tightening his grip. Gross’ eyes roll back and he goes limp, forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to pry Bezerra off of him at 1:28 of the first round.





Zak Jensen vs. Neil Grove

Round 1
The big men come out throwing bombs and Jensen lands first. Grove drops to his knees and Jensen pounds away from the standing position. Grove latches onto a leg and drags Jensen down, and the South African appears to have recovered as he drops punches through Jensen’s guard. Grove drops back for a leglock, but he’s not in a great position. With his free left hand, Grove punches to Jensen’s face, while the American returns fire to the body of Grove. Finally, Grove relents on the submission attempt and goes back to guard. Jensen briefly throws up a triangle, but it’s not there. Grove stacks up and breaks it and dives back into Jensen’s guard with heavy, heavy punches. Referee Yves Lavigne sees Jensen’s lights flicker in the flurry and steps in for the save exactly 2:00 into the first
round.

Chris Horodecki vs. Chris Saunders

Round 1
Saunders lands an outside leg kick and misses on a stumbling, spinning backfist attempt. Horodecki is pawing with long, swiping lefts that miss, but then digs one to the American’s ribs. The lightweights tie up and trade knees on the cage until Horodecki pulls Saunders down with a single-leg. Saunders tries to pull rubber guard and Horodecki flattens him out, keeping a wide base as he tries to step into mount. He nearly does, but Saunders elevates him and Horodecki winds up in north-south position. Guillotine attempt from Horodecki looks tight, but Saunders squeaks his head out. Back to top control for Horodecki as we enter the last two minutes of the opening frame. Horodecki keeps a waistlock as Saunders uses the cage to stand back up, then nails “Showtime” with some knees and foot stomps on the fence. Another single-leg from Horodecki has Saunders looking for a kimura from his back. The attempt doesn’t last long and Horodecki is back to throwing short punches to the body from Saunders’ open guard in the final half-minute.

Round 2
Saunders gets under a wild punch from Horodecki and tries to bring him down, but Horodecki stays up. Horodecki perfectly times a knee with a counterpunch and takes Saunders down again. Now it’s Saunders with a guillotine attempt; it’s not much, and Horodecki extracts his head after a few seconds. Saunders neutralizes Horodecki’s strikes with a closed guard, but Horodecki keeps punching to the ribs until referee Dan Miragliotta issues a stand-up. Horodecki lobs a few crisp combos to the head and body of Saunders and both men score with a few knees in the clinch before Horodecki trips Saunders down. Horodecki moves to half-guard on Saunders’ right and Saunders just clings on for the last 30 seconds, absorbing a few elbows.

Round 3
Horodecki trips Saunders back down within the first half-minute of the final period. Saunders has a little more urgency on the mat now, throwing up armbars and triangles, though neither stick. Back to his feet goes Saunders, with Horodecki behind him, drilling knees to the American’s thighs. Horodecki drops for a double-leg, can’t get it and stands back up. The action slows against the fence and ref Miragliotta restarts the pair. Saunders leaps in with a reckless knee and gets plowed down to the floor. Horodecki pulls his head from a loose guillotine and works from half-guard. He’s stuffed back to Saunders’ closed guard and goes back to driving short right hands to the ribs. Finally, Horodecki gets to full mount with 45 seconds on the clock. Saunders ties up with a body lock while Horodecki punches away and is again warned by the ref. Horodecki finishes the fight in half-guard, dropping elbows on Saunders’ face.

Official result: All three judges cageside -- Jason Rogers, Pasquale Procopio and Jerin Valel -- score it 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Chris Horodecki.

Bellator Featherweight Tournament Semifinal
Nazareno Malegarie vs. Marlon Sandro

Round 1
In the southpaw stance, Sandro stalks forward and makes Malegarie flinch with an uppercut-hook combo. Malegarie is missing with his own punches as both men feel out the distance. Sandro catches Malegarie coming in with an uppercut to the ribs. A big right hand over the top stumbles Malegarie and he dives for a takedown, which Sandro stuffs. Malegarie is stepping back at every feint from Sandro now, clearly aware of the Nova Uniao fighter’s power. He dives at Sandro’s leg again, and again Sandro resists the takedown, popping Malegarie with a few punches as he sprawls. Left hook connects for Malegarie, whose face is bearing the damage as he’s slammed with another left hook-right straight combination. Another left hook from Sandro worsens the mouse under Malegarie’s right eye. Sandro puts a one-two on the Argentinean, then an overhand right. Sandro slips in the final seconds and Malegarie tries to capitalize with a leaping knee to no avail.

Round 2
Sandro continues to beat Malegarie to the punch as they come out firing at a much quicker clip in the second. Malegarie tries to tie up and bully Sandro on the fence, but gets shucked off. Sandro’s wide hooks keep clipping his man, though his forearms are landing just as often. The Brazilian pops Malegarie with a few stiff left jabs and ducks under a wild punch. Malegarie ducks in, but it’s Sandro who gets underhooks and trips him down. Malegarie squirms back up quickly and puts a short right hand on Sandro, who replies with a couple hard lefts and a waistlock. Sandro changes to a single underhook and puts Malegarie’s back on the cage, defending a trip before tripping Malegarie down himself.

Sandro stands and fires off a few punches as Malegarie stands, then leaps at Malegarie with a knee that connects. Another takedown for Sandro with 20 ticks left in the round. Malegarie hops back up and the featherweights end the round clinched.

Round 3
Sandro continues picking Malegarie off, then sweeps the lead leg out from under the Argentinean. Malegarie stands and eats a three-piece from Sandro, who ties up in the center of the cage. They stall out and split, accidentally clashing heads in the ensuing exchange. Neither man seems fazed, so referee Josh Rosenthal allows the action to continue. Sandro is pouring on the combinations now, worsening the damage to Malegarie’s right eye and blasting the Ataque Duplo fighter with an uppercut to the solar plexus. Malegarie tries to shoot, gets stuffed and winds up with his back pressed against the cage. He reverses and tries to pop Sandro on the way out, but Sandro hops away. One minute to go and Malegarie knows he needs a finish here. He pushes forward, swinging big punches and landing a few grazing shots before Sandro cracks him with a pair of jumping knees. The featherweights keep firing right down to the final horn.

Official result: It’s a clean sweep with scores of 30-27 from judges Frank Jackson, Jason Rodgers and Pasquale Procopio, all in favor of Marlon Sandro, who advances to the final of Bellator’s Summer Series featherweight tournament.

Bellator Featherweight Tournament Semifinal
Ronnie Mann vs. Pat Curran

Round 1
Some tense stalking from the hard-hitting featherweights early on. Curran catches Mann stepping inside on two separate occasions in the first minute, but Mann appears unfazed as he steps back out. Curran springs forward with a jumping knee that misses. Mann’s trying to find his range with jabs and high kicks, with little success so far. Curran goes for another jumping knee, hitting his mark this time and following up with a thumping left hand. The men clinch up on the fence and Curran brings it to the floor, landing in Mann’s tight guard. Rubber guard for the Englishman now as he socks Curran with short rights to the face. Curran busts loose and stands over Mann, looking to dive through the guard, but Mann defends well. Curran steps into side control and looks to frame up a brabo choke, but the round ends there.

Round 2
Curran snaps off a sweet right hook and pushes Mann away with a pair of teep kicks. The American controls the center of Bellator’s massive cage as Mann circles the outside and looks for an opening. Mann comes forward with a one-two-leg kick combo and takes a body blow from Curran in return. Curran keeps trying to land his big leaping knee, though his attempts thus far in round two have not been as successful as in the first. A couple solid body kicks connect for Curran; Mann stays on the outside and swipes with counter right hooks which connect, but don’t seem to damage Curran. With 20 seconds on the clock, Curran jumps in with a knee to the guts and shoots for a double-leg. Mann tries a guillotine and pulls guard, but Curran reverses to top position and rides out the round. Mann sports a mouse beneath his right eye as he returns to his corner.

Round 3
Curran gets right to work, pumping his left jab while Mann goes low with crisp leg kicks. Mann pushes forward and clips Curran with a sweeping left, then whacks the Chicagoan’s upper thigh and body with kicks. Curran starts to return fire with outside thigh kicks; after three or four, Mann begins checking them and Curran goes inside. Mann times a body kick and comes over the top with a right straight. Two minutes to go. Curran’s combinations are snapping Mann’s head back now, his leg kicks causing “Kid Ninja” to tilt a bit. Mann still looks fresh in the waning seconds, but he’s not letting his hands go. Curran jumps in with a knee at the 20-second mark, but Mann gets on his back and drags the American down. Mann tries a rear-naked choke, then a guillotine, but neither is particularly close and time runs out.
