Lawler, ‘Babalu’ Official for Strikeforce

On the eve of their catchweight duel, former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and one-time Strikeforce light heavyweight titleholder Renato “Babalu” Sobral stepped on the scales and hit their intended marks.

Lawler checked in at 195 pounds for his main event matchup with Sobral (193.5) at Strikeforce “Los Angeles” on Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The six other participants on the main card -- including Dream welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis (169.5) and Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (171) -- also met their mandated weight requirements at Tuesday’s official weigh-in.

Based out of the H.I.T. Squad gym, where he trains alongside longtime friend and UFC hall of famer Matt Hughes, Lawler has not competed since he knocked out Melvin Manhoef at Strikeforce “Miami” in January. The 28-year-old has delivered 14 of his 17 career victories by knockout or technical knockout and owns notable wins against former Icon Sport champion Frank Trigg, Pride Fighting Championships veteran Murilo “Ninja” Rua and Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts standout Joey Villasenor. None of his last 14 fights have gone the distance.

Sobral has posted five wins in his past six fights. The 34-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt last appeared in August, when he succumbed to first-round punches from Gegard Mousasi and relinquished his light heavyweight crown at Strikeforce “Carano vs. Cyborg.” Victories against current UFC light heavyweight king Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, world-ranked middleweight Chael Sonnen and French striker Cyrille Diabate anchor his resume, which dates back to 1997. Sobral has secured more than half (18) of his 35 wins by submission.
