Two of mixed martial arts’ top regional promotions are joining forces.
Legacy Fighting Championship and Resurrection Fighting Alliance announced Monday that the organizations are merging to form Legacy Fighting Alliance. The new promotion will officially launch in January 2017; RFA President Ed Soares will serve as CEO, while Sven Bean will be the chief operating officer.
"This is an exciting day for everyone involved," Soares said. "What our two companies have accomplished individually is remarkable, but the sky is truly the limit when you consider what will come next.
"Our athletes will have an unrivaled platform to compete in front of a nationally televised audience — not to mention in more than 40 countries around the world — and prove they are worthy of a spot at the sport's highest level. Our existing companies have placed more than 100 fighters in just the UFC and Bellator, alone. Quite simply, for the fighters on our roster, the future is now.”
Both Legacy FC and RFA aired on AXS-TV, and nothing will change on that front, as the network has retained exclusive rights to air Legacy Fighting Alliance events next year. The new promotion is expected to hold 30 events in 2017, according to the release.
Legacy Fighting Alliance’s initial event will likely pit RFA champions against Legacy FC champions to crown inaugural titlists for the the fledgling organization. More details regarding that card will be revealed in the coming weeks. When both were still separate entities, Legacy FC and RFA staged a cross-promotional event in May 2015.
"We believe the merger of Legacy Fighting Championship and Resurrection Fighting Alliance is an exciting and logical progression of the sport," Legacy FC President Mick Maynard said. "As Triple-A baseball is to MLB, we will continue to develop the best prospects by providing a proving ground and a stage for the fighters to grow that is unrivaled in the sport. In addition, this merger brings together some of the best minds in the business. It truly is an MMA dream team, and it will continue to build our legacy in the world of MMA.”
