Jimi Manuwa will lock horns with Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214 in Anaheim on July 29.
The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the light heavyweight bout on Wednesday. UFC 214 takes place at the Honda Center and is headlined by a 205-pound title rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.
UFC President Dana White previously revealed that Manuwa would be on the card as a backup plan in the event that either Jones or Cormier had to pull out of the main event. After knocking out the highly-regarded Misha Cirkunov in 28 seconds at UFC Fight Night 109, Oezdemir called for a showdown with Manuwa, and now his request has been granted.
Manuwa, 37, has won three of his last four Octagon appearances, including back-to-back knockouts of Corey Anderson and Ovince St. Preux. The former British Association of Mixed Martial Arts standout is 6-2 during his promotional tenure, with his only defeats coming to former title challengers Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson. “Poster Boy” has finished 15 of his 17 career triumphs by knockout or technical knockout.
Prior to his signature win over Cirkunov, Oezdemir debuted in the Octagon with a short-notice split-decision triumph over St. Preux at UFC Fight Night 104. The 27-year-old Switzerland native owns a 14-1 career mark that includes a two-bout stint with Bellator MMA. Oezdemir has finished 10 of his wins by KO/TKO and one via submission.
