Lightweight Contenders Eddie Alvarez, Dustin Poirier Set for Rematch at UFC on Fox 30
Speculation has been mounting for some time when
Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight contenders Eddie
Alvarez and Dustin
Poirier would lock horns again inside the Octagon after their
controversial fight.
Alvarez and Poirier met in May 2017 at UFC 211 in a highly-entertaining bout that turned sour in the second round when Alvarez landed illegal knees to the head of his downed opponent. The bout was declared a no-contest.
Poirier has stated that Alvarez has rejected to fight him on
several occasions since that bout, which Alvarez had vehemently
rejected.
Alvarez sent a tweet on Thursday directed at Poirier suggesting the fight was official.
Poirier responded in style:
The fight seemed to be on the rocks earlier in the day when ESPN’s Brett Okamoto claimed Poirier was holding out, possibly because Alvarez’s camp did not respond in a timely fashion to a May 4 deadline set by Poirier’s representatives.
The rematch should be another entertaining fight with both men coming into the bout on the heels of impressive wins. Alvarez handed Justin Gaethje his first ever loss by the way of a third-round knockout at UFC 218 in December, while Poirier has two straight finishes also over Gaethje and former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.
