Lightweight Contenders Guida, Henderson Agree to Nov. 12 Bout

A pivotal lightweight bout is in the works for UFC on Fox 1, as former WEC champion Benson Henderson will square off with fellow contender Clay Guida at the Nov. 12 event.

UFC officials announced Tuesday that the fighters have verbally agreed to lock horns at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The news comes on the heels of the UFC’s announcement that the event will be headlined by a five-round heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.

While Velasquez-Dos Santos is currently the only bout guaranteed to make the Fox broadcast, officials have previously stated that in the event of a quick finish, one or more undercard bouts could be a part of the promotion’s inaugural appearance on Fox’s flagship network.

Regardless, UFC president Dana White has stated that the event’s remaining bouts will be broadcast in some manner for fan consumption. Likely candidates for distribution include Spike TV and Facebook, as both media have been utilized by the UFC regularly in the recent past.

After suffering only the second loss of his four-year pro career and dropping his WEC title to Anthony Pettis this past December, Henderson (Pictured) has rebounded with a vengeance. The MMA Lab representative made a successfully UFC debut against Mark Bocek in April and followed that unanimous decision win with another clear-cut nod from the judges, battering Jim Miller at UFC Live 5 on Aug. 14.

Guida has won four straight bouts, submitting Shannon Gugerty, Rafael dos Anjos and Takanori Gomi before outpointing Pettis in his most recent outing. The Illinoisan used superior wrestling to take Pettis down numerous times in their clash at “The Ultimate Fighter 13” finale, earning a unanimous decision for his efforts on June 4. “The Carpenter” has not lost since December 2009, when he was submitted by Kenny Florian at UFC 107.
