A battle of lightweight strikers is set for UFC 197, as Anthony Pettis will face Edson Barboza on April 23 in Las Vegas.
The matchup was revealed during UFC Tonight on Wednesday. UFC 197 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a light heavyweight championship rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.
The former UFC 155-pound champion, Pettis enters the bout on a two-fight skid. He lost the title to Rafael dos Anjos in a lopsided five-round verdict at UFC 185 before suffering a split-decision defeat against Eddie Alvarez in his most recent outing at UFC Fight Night Boston on Jan. 17. Prior to that, the Roufusport product won five straight in the Octagon, including notable wins over Donald Cerrone, Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez.
Barboza, meanwhile, has lost two of his last three appearances. Most recently, the Brazilian suffered a second-round submission loss to Tony Ferguson at “The Ultimate Fighter 22” finale on Dec. 11. Barboza is 10-4 within the Las Vegas-based promotion overall, with wins over the likes of Bobby Green, Evan Dunham, Ross Pearson and Paul Felder.
